Natural Summer Skincare Tips for Soft, Glowing Skin
As the seasons change, your skin care routine also needs a little adjustment.  Your skin endures a lot during the summertime; which means it needs you to take extra good care of it!  Practice these 5 simple tips in order to keep your skin radiant, soft and healthy all summer long!
{ Hydrate } This is super important for not just your skin, but your entire body’s physiological health.  Keeping your body hydrated will flush out toxins and keep your skin clear, supple and beautiful. If you find it challenging to consistently drink water throughout the day, add some fresh fruit. This is a great way to get some extra vitamin C in your diet, and make the routine of hydrating a little more refreshing. Some of my favorite things to add to my water during the summer are sliced strawberries, freshly squeezed lemon juice, mint leaves, raspberries or slices of cucumbers!
{ Nourish }  Your diet has an enormous impact on your skin’s appearance and health.  It’s important to make sure you’re eating enough foods that will help to protect and nourish your skin, especially during the summer months.  Sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to skin damage and pre-mature aging. Focus on taking in plenty of antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats and oils in your everyday diet.  Some of my favorite ‘beauty foods’ are kale, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, cherries, spinach, avocados, salmon, nuts, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, olive oil, greek yogurt and tomatoes.  These power foods are packed with nutritional value and can repair damaged skin cells, protect against free radicals and UV damage, and give your skin a natural glow from the inside out.  Not to mention, they make you feel awesome.
{ Protect }  Everyone loves to have a bronze, sun-kissed glow, but the long-term health of your skin is so much more important. So no matter how long you’re planning on playing in the sun, always protect your skin! Find a good non-toxic sunscreen that you love, and get in the habit of applying it. One of my favorite natural sunscreens to use is by True Natural. Their products are made with certified organic ingredients, and contain zero chemicals.
{ Exfoliate } This is something that is super easy and super affordable.  Try making your own all natural body scrub to keep your skin soft, even, and glowing all summer long. You can make your own using things like sugar or sea salt, then adding skin-nourishing ingredients such as natural oils, honey or lemon juice!  My favorite brand of natural and essential oils is Aura Cacia.  They’re a great company with incredible, high quality products.  I’ve been using their oils for years, and I’d recommend them to anyone.  Here’s a great sugar scrub recipe I found on their site!
Grapefruit Lavender Sugar Scrub
24 drops lavender oil
24 drops grapefruit oil
¾ cup avocado oil
1 cup fine grain natural sugar
"Mix essential oils with avocado oil, pour over sugar and stir. Apply to damp skin after using a gentle cleanser. Buff gently. Rinse with warm water and pat dry."
{ Moisturize } Keeping your skin moisturized is important, but what’s more important, is what you’re moisturizing with. If you’re using a chemically-based lotion or even a super processed oil (baby oil), you’re not doing much good.  Use pure, minimally-refined natural oils to keep your skin supple, radiant, soft and healthy from the inside out.  My favorite natural oils to use in the summertime are grapeseed oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, sesame oil, sweet almond oil and jojoba oil!  Like I mentioned before, Aura Cacia offers some of the best natural and essential oils out there.
I hope you enjoyed these 5 simple tips! Get in the habit of practicing them regularly and you will have beautiful, healthy skin all year long!

{ Product Review } Marie-Veronique Organics MVO Mist
The MVO Mist is really unlike any other mist or toner I’ve tried.  It’s unique combination of ingredients work to increase elasticity and firmness, while providing anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits.
{ How to Use }
After cleansing, mist over face, neck and chest.  Store this product in a cool place. I usually use this one to twice a day (morning and night).
{ Why I Love it }
 I have very sensitive skin, even when it comes to natural products.  After the first few times I used this, I immediately noticed its calming, firming and toning properties.  It provides your skin with nutrient-rich moisture, so your complexion feels wonderful and looks fresh, brightened and dewy.  I also really love the subtle, earthy scent!
{ What Makes it Awesome }
What really sets this mist apart from others, is what’s in it… and, what’s not in it.  75% of the ingredients are organic.  The MVO Mist is also 100% free of parabens and other toxic fragrances.  Its alcohol-free formula also prevents skin from drying out.  Here’s why the key ingredients are so amazing…
{ DMAE }
"This antioxidant membrane stabilizer helps to increase elasticity and firmness by stimulating muscle movement via the neurotransmitter acetyl- choline."
{ Helichrysum Essential Oil }
"This anti-aging powerhouse delivers antioxidant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory benefits to your skin."

{ Product Review } Marie Veronique Organics MVO Face OilI’ve been using Marie Veronique Organics MVO Face Oil for the past few weeks, and I had to share how powerful and amazing this 100% natural, lightweight oil felt.  One of my favorite things is how rich and long-lasting it is, while also being fast-absorbing and light.  It immediately brightened my complexion, leaving it soft, supple and glowing. This miracle oil’s key ingredients are a unique blend of Krill Oil, Argan Oil and Blackberry Seed Oil.  Here’s what make these ingredients are so awesome…
{ Krill Oil } "In addition to its excellent Omega-3, 6 and 9 balance, this oil is an excellent source of astaxanthin, an extraordinary antioxidant, and phosphatidyl serine, which Korean scientists have dubbed the “anti-aging fat molecule.” Krill oil is, in fact, one of the very few oils known to contain phosphatidyl serine in significant quantities." { Argan Oil } "Rich in Omega-6 and 9, Vitamin E, carotenes, squalene, and phenols, argan oil possesses a remarkable ability to nourish, moisturize and improve skin elasticity." { Blackberry Seed Oil } "While difficult to extract, this oil is high in natural Vitamin C as well as several types of Vitamin E and lutein making it an excellent ingredient for repairing damaged skin. It is a superb choice for people looking for a natural Vitamin C source to prevent aging."
I love this product and would definitely recommend this to all my clients; especially those with dry, damaged, or sensitive skin.  Marie Veronique Organics products have been featured in publications such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Whole Living, Coco Eco, Marin and many more. { DIY } sugar coconut citrus scrub
Sugar scrubs are a great way to brighten and soften your complexion!  I love mixing in my favorite oils, and fresh juice and pulp from seasonal fruits!  You can try this recipe, or mix your own!
Here’s what you’ll need!
{1 cup of raw cane sugar, fine grain}
{2 tablespoons of extra virgin coconut oil, melted}
{2 tablespoons of blood orange juice/pulp; freshly squeezed}
Ready to glow?
Combine sugar with melted coconut oil and blood orange juice/pulp.  Mix well, and apply to wet skin in a gentle, circular motion. Leave for 2-3 mins, then rinse!
Why this scrub is super awesome…
Sugar is an excellent natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that encourages cell turnover by breaking down dull, bonded skin cells.  Cell turnover is an important process that leaves your complexion looking fresh, bright and luminous!  The glycolic acid also protects skin from harmful toxins.  Sugar scrubs are ideal for dry skin because of the sugar’s natural humectant properties… this enables moisture to be drawn into your skin… sweeet!
Coconut Oil is one of my favorite natural skincare remedies!  It’s molecular structure makes it ideal for skincare because it’s super lightweight and absorbable.
Blood Oranges are my version of citrus super fruits!  They contain anthocyanins, which are vacuolar pigments that give the fruit their beautiful, bright coloring inside.  Anthocyanins are known to have anti-inflammatory properties that support healthy collagen, as well as blood vessel protection against oxidative damage.  Blood Oranges are also rich in Vitamins A & C; both essential for repairing issue and damaged skin cells for healthy, radiant looking skin!

{ DIY } coffee cinnamon honey apricot scrub
Upcycle your used coffee grounds to make an all natural face and body scrub! You can make your own recipe or try this one!  If you love coffee as much as I do, you’ll have enough upcycled coffee grounds to do this scrub on the regular!  I do it 1-2 times a week to keep my skin feeling super soft and looking evenly toned and glowing!
Here’s what you’ll need!
{1 cup of upcycled coffee grounds, dried & finely ground}
{2 tablespoon of raw honey, melted}
{1 tablespoon of apricot kernel oil, or oil of your choice}
{1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon}
Ready to glow?
Combine coffee grounds with melted raw honey, apricot kernel oil, and cinnamon.  If you have more sensitive skin, feel free to leave the cinnamon out!  Mix well, and apply to wet skin in a gentle, circular motion. Leave for 2-3 mins, then rinse!
Why this scrub is super awesome…
Coffee is great for your skin for a number of reasons! First and foremost, it’s packed with antioxidants… which we all know are essential for healthy, young looking skin!  Antioxidants are one of the main things that fight the effects of toxins and free-radicals that cause pre-mature aging and dull skin.  The caffeine in coffee is also great for reducing redness, inflammation and swelling… which makes this scrub perfect for early mornings when your sleepy eyes need a little TLC!
Raw Honey… I’ll say it a hundred million times, raw honey is the ultimate natural remedy for beautiful skin! The antibacterial properties of raw honey heal and prevent blemishes… it also has a ton of antioxidants, so again, anti-aging power!  It’s also extremely nourishing and moisturizing, so it’s perfect for sensitive or dry skin.  Last, it opens up pores so they’re easier to clarify and detox/unclog… basically, raw honey is magical!
Apricot Kernel Oil is also a powerhouse ingredient when it comes to natural skincare.  It contains lots of soothing, nourishing and moisturizing properties with it’s rich sources of oleic acid and Vitamin E.  It’s ideal for sensitive and dry skin, and also contains anti-aging properties.
Ground Cinnamon draws oxygen and blood to the skin’s surface which help to clear and prevent breakouts and blemishes! A little bit goes a long way though so only use a teeny bit when mixing your scrubs.  If you’re mixing just a facial scrub, or have sensitive skin maybe opt to leave the cinnamon out, or just use a pinch!  The 1/2 teaspoon measurement in this recipe is intended for a full body scrub.

{DIY: Pumpkin Face Mask}
What better way to celebrate the best month of the year with pumpkin everything! Here’s a luxuriously nourishing pumpkin cinnamon yogurt mask that will leave your skin feeling soft, balanced and moisturized, and your complexion glowing!
Why pumpkin is so awesome….
{The enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) found in pumpkin increase cell turnover, the process of new skin cells replacing old, dull cells, leaving your complexion radiant and super smooth! It’s kind of like a super gentle, all natural chemical peel!}
{Pumpkin is also packed with powerful antioxidants such as Vitamins A and C; both known to boost collagen production for a firm, evenly toned complexion.}
{Last, pumpkin contains tons of Zinc, which is great for oily or acne prone skin because it helps to regulate oil production, repair and heal damaged tissue, and reduce inflammation.}
What you’ll need…
{½ cup organic canned pumpkin}
{3 tablespoons of plain organic greek yogurt}
{½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon}

{1 tablespoon of raw honey}

Ready to glow?
{Mix ingredients in a small bowl, then let your mix chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. This will mix enough for 2-3 masks! Once your mixed mask is chilled, apply a generous layer of the chilled mask to a freshly washed face… allow the mask to sit for 15-20 minutes… you might feel a tingly sensation from the ground cinnamon, but that’ll go away once you remove the mask. Feel free to leave the cinnamon out if you want a more gentle mask. Once the mask is dried, removed gently with a warm wash cloth, rinse with cold water, then gently pat skin dry with a clean towel! And voila, enjoy your new glow and super soft complexion!}

{Interview Feature} Indie Lee
Meet Indie, (again!), I interviewed Indie Lee a few years ago when I first discovered her incredible line of 100% natural skincare products. Let me catch you up if you’re not familiar with her products… this completely fabulous, eco-chic skincare guru launched her line of all natural products after courageously conquering a life-threatening brain tumor believed to be caused by exposure to environmental toxins. Indie awoke from surgery on April 22nd, 2009 and vowed to be an advocate for nontoxic, safe products, and she’s been raising awareness and the standard of quality in the skincare industry ever since! Indie Lee products have been featured in top beauty and style sources such as New York Magazine’s The Cut with Christina Han, Rachel Zoe’s The Zoe Report, Glamour Magazine, Seventeen Magazine, Refinery 29, and many more!
What do you find inspires you most when creating new products? {Indie} “I often look for what’s missing in my arsenal of skincare products! But I always listen to what my fans and friends are talking about and join in the discussion of what they might be missing. The feedback I typically hear is that they can’t find it in the market place already or they aren’t sure of the product because it isn’t made by a brand they trust. If they are looking for an eco-chic alternative to a product they might have already been introduced to and are looking to me to create it, then that becomes a huge motivator for me!”
Which new products have you added to the line? Which are you favorite and why? {Indie} “Our most recent product launch is the Indie Lee Calendula Eye Balm, (.5oz, $42), which was designed for the sensitive skin around the eyes. It’s truly a multi-tasking miracle balm that diminishes dark circles and increases the skin’s elasticity. The powerhouse ingredient in it is an oil extracted from the calendula flower, which is known for boosting skin’s resilience and acting as a natural anti-inflammatory. It’s also packed with moisturizing mango seed butter, calming lavender, and the ultra-effective Squalane oil. This pot of (mari)gold is already a fan favorite, leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated.”

What are some of your favorite ingredients to incorporate into your products? {Indie} “…Squalane, Squalane and Squalane! It really is an amazing ingredient with so many benefits.  Squalane Oil is perhaps nature’s perfect moisturizer. It is ideal for the face, hands, or any part of the body in need of some serious rejuvenation and replenishment. It has proven to be especially effective for those with sensitive skin or issues such as eczema, psoriasis, dry and rough skin, skin cracks, dermatitis, and rashes. The human body actually produces Squalane naturally – our skin needs it to retain moisture and reduce the signs of aging. However, as we age, Squalane production decreases significantly (especially after the age of 23). Using a product with the ingredient can help combat the side effects (wrinkles, dryness) that come with this natural decrease.”
Which original products are still, and will always be your favorite, and why? {Indie} “…The Indie Lee Citrus Body Scrub – it’s off the shelves right now, but will be returning this fall for the fans! Stay tuned for details!”
What are your current, and long term goals the brand? {Indie} “Right now the big concentration is on distribution! We’ll be announcing a few exciting partnerships this fall, giving the brand even more national exposure. We’ll also be debuting three new products in September, one more in November and then two next January!”
Do you see the line expanding to any other products aside from hair and skincare? (Indie Lee laundry detergent, soy candles, lipstick… anyone!?) {Indie} “Yes – I’ve been working on a few product lines as extensions to the skincare collection, but nothing to let you know about just yet!”
If you had to pick 5 words to describe your line/brand what would they be? {Indie} “Eco-chic, honest, aspirational, obtainable, transparent.”
Which specific products do you recommend for dry skin, oily/acne prone skin, aging skin, and sensitive skin?  {Indie} “Most of the Indie Lee products work for a variety of skin types, which is part of why they are all so amazing! For example, the Squalane Facial Oil, (1oz, $32), helps with skin hydration, evenness of tone, improvement of pore size, improvement in skin conditions and fading of sun spots and blemish marks. Many people are afraid of applying oils to the face for fear of break outs and clogging pores. That’s due to bad experiences with mineral oils which are made of large molecules that don’t actually absorb into the skin – they sit on surface of skin. However, the Squalane Facial Oil mimics the skin’s production of oil, sending a message to your sebaceous glands to slow down and normalize production of oil. It absorbs right into the skin without leaving you greasy or clogging pores and is great for sensitive skin, normal skin, and oily skin.”
What are some of your favorite green brands/companies and why? (clothing, makeup/cosmetics, household products, etc.) {Indie} “I’m absolutely head-over-heels for MOTT50.  The brand offers a full line of clothing items that are also rated for sun protection; chic clothes and accessories that double as skin protection. I mean brilliant! For makeup, I’ve been recently turned on to ILIA Beauty: I love LVX Nails… and of course my skincare-soul-sista will always be Britta Aragon, who founded CV Skinlabs.”
Let’s end with a little Indieism about life, love and happiness… {Indie} “It’s when you are truly happy within, you can make the greatest (positive) impact outward.”

{ Product Review } CV Skinlabs Restorative Skin Balm
This is the third product from the CV Skinlabs line I’ve tried so far. I was really happy with not only the effectiveness, but the product’s versatility. It’s a 100% organic and natural petrolatum-free balm that nourishes, softens and moisturizes severely dry skin, lips and cuticles, while calming sensitive, irritated skin. It’s the ideal remedy for not only replenishing moisture, but also healing and soothing cuts, scrapes, burns, IV areas, and new scars.
I use it most frequently as a super rich nighttime lip balm. I love mixing raw honey with sugar and using that as a homemade lip scrub, then applying the CV Skinlabs Restorative Balm. It leaves my lips feeling soft, supple and moisturized all day. I also use it a lot on my cuticles. It doesn’t have a strong scent, and absorbs quickly while still providing long-lasting moisture to my skin.
It’s derived from 100% organic and natural ingredients, and free all synthetic fragrances & dyes, parabens, formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxiane, hydroquinone, phthalates, mineral oil/petrolatum, silicones, propylene glycol, SLS/SLES, PEG/PPG, triclosan, disodium EDTA, hydroquinone, talc, MEA-DEA-TEA or chemical sunscreens.

Key Ingredients: Calendula, Sea Buckthorn Oil, Arnica—a powerful trio of plant-based antioxidants, fat-soluble vitamins and sesquiterpene lactones (a class of naturally occurring plant terpenoids), all of which are known for their healing, immune boosting, antiseptic and skin-regeneration properties.
+ Carnauba + Bee’s Wax—safeguards the moisture barrier.
+ Vitamin E—powerful, proven antioxidant; aids in wound healing.
Along with those potent key ingredients, this advanced therapy balm is infused with the exclusive CV Skinlabs Tri-Rescue complex; a blend of turmeric, alpha-bisabolol and reishi mushroom. Together these ingredients provide anti-inflammatory, wound-healing and skin-soothing properties that enable repair and healing of damaged skin.
A .5oz tube of the Restorative Skin Balm is available for $26.00 at CVSkinlabs.com! A teeny bit goes a long way so .5oz will definitely last a while. This balm makes the perfect winter go-to for dry skin, cuticle and lips, but can also be used year-round to sooth and heal minor cuts, scrapes, burns, IV areas, and new scars. Overall, I really love this product, and would definitely recommend it!

{ Product Review }  CV Skinlabs “Rescue + Relief Spray”
Here’s the next product review from the amazing, nontoxic, safe skincare line, CV Skinlabs!  If you had a chance to read my last product review of the "Calming Moisture for Face, Neck & Scalp" cream, or my interview feature with the founder/creator of CV Skinlabs, Britta Aragon, then you already know how much I love and support this skincare line.
I’ve been using the Rescue + Relief Spray for a few months now, and I was beyond impressed.  It’s a milky emulsion that refreshes, soothes, hydrates and calms even the most sensitive skin. It provides immediate cooling relief from sun exposure, rosacea, eczema, rashes, laser treatments, chemical peels, shaving, waxing, minor burns, and radiation treatments. It can also be used as a daily toner! I use it after washing my face, and before applying my moisturizer… it’s also great to use in the mornings if you don’t need to wash your face, but want to wake up and refresh your complexion!
This miracle spray has been featured in US Weekly Magazine, People en Espanol Magazine, and Real Simple Magazine. I’m so happy I discovered this in time for winter when my skin is the most sensitive and dry. I’m also really excited to have a safe, natural product to use this summer… even though I always wear plenty of SPF, it’s nice to have something like this in case I get a little too much sun!
Key Ingredients - All of CV Skinlabs products are infused with their exclusive Tri-Rescue Complex… a unique blend of turmeric, alpha-bisabolol and reishi mushroom.
Other Key Ingredients…
Chamomile + Cucumber – together deliver calming, cooling and skin-softening benefits.
Water Lily – possesses purifying and heat-removing properties.
Valerian + Comfrey – provide soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits; help support skin healing.
I have to say, this is another really fantastic product that I would definitely recommend to any of my clients. One of my favorite things about the CV Skinlabs line, is that the products are so compatible and effective on so many different skin types. You can get a 6oz. bottle of the Rescue + Relief Spray for $34.00 at CVskinlabs.com!
