Product Review: Grass-Fed Beef Tallow from Lineage Provisions

Lineage Provisions 100% Grass-Fed Beef Tallow

I’ve been using grass-fed beef tallow in my organic face and body moisturizer recipes for several years now and it has truly transformed my dry and sensitive skin. I recently began cooking with tallow, too and love it!! I’ve used ghee and coconut oil for most of my cooking and baking, and they remain to be some of my favorite fats to use, but the grass-fed beef tallow from Lineage Provisions has been so delicious and versatile. From cooking, to high fat protein bars, to skincare, tallow is a wonderful and healthy fat that can help support an active and healthy routine. If you’re wondering about plant oils, I still use high-quality olive oil in the kitchen, just not with heat. I save it for things like homemade wellness shots, dressings and sauces, etc.

In this post we’ll go over the nutritional benefits, as well as the skin benefits of high-quality, pure tallow. We’ll also discuss why the grass-fed beef tallow from Lineage Provisions is truly the best on the market.

What is Tallow?

Tallow is one of the most nutrient-dense and versatile fats, perfect for high-heat cooking and even skincare. Most beef tallow companies only use fat from only the kidneys, but Lineage Provisions uses a nose-to-tail, slow rendering method that results in an enhanced yet subtle flavor, smooth buttery texture, and a gorgeously rich yellow color. These qualities are all indicative of a broader nutrient profile that can only be found in tallow from 100% grass-fed cows.

Why Buy Lineage Provisions?

Here are some big reasons why I love and trust the Grass-Fed Tallow from Lineage Provisions:

  • Lower polyunsaturated fats: Unlike grain-fed cattle, their grass-fed tallow has fewer polyunsaturated fats, making it more stable.

  • Lower in linoleic acid: Because Lineage uses fat from the entire cow, their tallow is lower in saturated fat and linoelic acid. The linoleic acid profile is 25-50% less in Lineage’s than most tallows on the market, which also provides an increased smoke point for high-temp cooking

  • Better Nutritional Profile: Lower omega-6 levels help maintain a better omega-6 to omega-3 balance, supporting overall health.

  • More Diverse Composition of Fatty Acids: Nose-to-tail means more diverse composition of fatty acids, including higher monounsaturated fatty acids (the good ones!). They’ve tested for this as well as vitamin E content which is also higher than other tallows.

  • Grass-Fed and Finished + Forage-Based Diet: Lineage cattle consume only grass and forage, which are naturally low in linoleic acid.

  • Pastured Their Entire Lives - Their cattle are pastured their entire lives - out in big, expansive open fields - and are not supplementally fed.

  • Wet Rendering vs. Conventional Dry Rendering: Most commercial tallow is produced using dry rendering, where fat is cooked at high temperatures (250-300°F) in open kettles or steam-jacketed vessels until the fat separates. This method is fast but oxidizes fats, degrades nutrients, and can lead to off-flavors. Lineage uses wet rendering, where fat is gently heated with water at lower temperatures (~190-220°F). This method: (1) Prevents Oxidation – Lower heat protects delicate fatty acids from heat damage, (2) Retains More Nutrients – Preserves fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and antioxidants, (3) Cleaner Flavor & Color – Produces a more neutral, fresh tallow compared to the sometimes burnt or gamey taste of dry-rendered tallow, (4) Result: A cleaner, more nutrient-dense tallow with superior taste and stability.

  • Why a Jacketed Kettles Make a Difference: Many tallow producers use direct flame heating, which can scorch fat and create burnt flavors. Their steam-jacketed kettles provide: (1) Even, Indirect Heat – No direct flame contact, preventing overheating and scorching, (2) Gentler Processing – Allows for slower, controlled rendering, preserving flavor and nutrients, (3) Higher Purity – No burnt solids or particulate contamination. Result: A smoother, more stable tallow with a cleaner taste and better shelf life.

  • Three-Stage Filtration for Superior Purity: Standard tallow is often only filtered once or not at all, leaving impurities, protein residues, and fine particulates that can cause rancidity and instability. Lineage uses a 3-stage filtration system to ensure: (1) Crystal-Clear Tallow – Removes fine particles, solids, and unwanted proteins, (2) Better Shelf Stability – Fewer impurities = less oxidation and spoilage over time, (3) Cleaner Cooking Performance – No burnt residues when used for frying or sautéing. Result: A highly refined, ultra-pure tallow with superior performance and longevity.

Additional Q+A:

Still got questions? No problem! If you don’t see your question below, feel free to leave it in the comment section at the very bottom of the post.

Q1: What is tallow and how is it made?

A: Tallow is rendered beef fat. Lineage Provisions uses fat from the whole animal from grass-fed and finished cows, slow-rendered at low temperatures in small batches to preserve nutrients and create a smooth, creamy texture.

Q2: How do I use beef tallow?

A: Tallow is perfect for high-heat cooking like frying and roasting due to its high smoke point. It also goes great in baked goods and things like protein bars! Beyond the kitchen, tallow is an excellent skin moisturizer and can be used in DIY skincare recipes.

Q3: Can Tallow really be used for skincare? Will it clog my pores?

A: Tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are incredibly nourishing for the skin. It has been used for centuries to heal, hydrate, and protect skin from environmental damage. High-quality tallow shouldn’t break your skin out. If you’re using quality tallow alongside the correct sterilization, sanitation and storage practices when making your own skincare items, you should not experience any breakouts or adverse reactions.

Q4: Is it safe for people with allergies?

A: Yes, tallow is allergen-free, with no dairy, gluten, or common allergens. It’s especially beneficial for those with sensitive skin or gut issues, as it can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Q5: What does the Lineage Provisions tallow taste like?

A: It has a mild beef flavor, making it versatile for both sweet and savory dishes. The taste is much less intense than you might expect, especially compared to other tallow products on the market.

Q6: How do I store it? Does it need to be refrigerated?

A: Store tallow in a cool, dark place, and it will last for months at room temperature. For longer shelf life, you can refrigerate or freeze it, where it will last up to a year or more. Whenever I make my tallow skincare products, I usually do store the extras in the fridge and only keep out one or two jars for current use. When I’m ready for a new jar, I simply pull one out of the fridge.

I hope you guys try this amazing tallow! As always, if you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comment section below.
